Esta pequeña criatura familiar de los arácnidos, por sus ocho patas, se encuentra dentro del grupo hematófago más antiguo de todos los animales terrestres conocidos en el planeta, durante todo este tiempo, han sido vectores de numerosas enfermedades infecciosas y alergias, esto es producido a través de sus excrementos, al infectar la herida de la víctima de la cual se alimentan; así como el de inhalar los restos de cuerpos de ácaros muertos los cuales se disipan en el aire en un finísimo polvo el cual es respirado tanto por sus presas como sus depredadores, esto quizás como un posible mecanismo de supervivencia.
Su tiempo de vida comprende desde uno hasta los tres meses, durante ese tiempo son capaces de realizan una o dos puestas de huevos, las cuales suelen contener entre 20 y 40 huevos. Primavera y otoño son las épocas más propicias para su reproducción.
